- Kitchen sink clogging is usually caused by grease, food residue, or soap scum that has hardened and caused the kitchen drain pipe to become clogged.
- When you notice water pooling in your kitchen sink, you know that your kitchen drain is clogged. Sometimes you can even hear the kitchen sink gurgling or bubbling as it slowly drains.
- A clogged kitchen sink can be made worse if there is a garbage disposal under the kitchen drain, because it creates a false sense of security that leads to improper use of the drains.

How do we unclog a Kitchen sink blockage?
First, we check the cause and depth of the problem. If the clog is relatively superficial, we try simple methods such as a plunger (suction cup). If it is something deeper and/or harder, we use a drain snake (also referred to as a drain snake). In difficult cases, we choose the electromechanical drain snake.
We may need to open the siphon to clean it thoroughly. Also, one of the sophisticated tools is the high-pressure water jet which penetrates to great depths and completely cleans even the most remote areas of the kitchen drain.
We have several tools that we use depending on the situation. However, we NEVER use CHEMICALS.

Signs that you have a clogged kitchen sink
When you have dirty dishes to wash, the last thing you want to worry about is a clogged kitchen sink. Learn how to recognize the symptoms of a clogged drain so you can take the necessary action.
Standing water
- Standing water in your sink is a clear sign that you have a clogged kitchen sink drain.
- If your sink has a slow drain, the water drains slowly, it indicates that there is a partial blockage in the drain which should be addressed immediately before the blockage becomes total.
Leakage
- Drain blockages can cause leaks in kitchen drains, which are usually located under the sink. Because the water has nowhere to go, it will cause pipes to leak where there is damage to the pipes.
- If a leak occurs, place a bucket under your sink to prevent any water damage.
Noise
- You definitely have a blockage if you hear a buzzing or gurgling sound when the water drains or you try to use your garbage disposal.
Kitchen sink blockage – Causes of clogging and unclogging
The kitchen sink is one of the most common drains we deal with. We have the knowledge to do a complete SINK UNCLOG, but we also understand why clogs occur. Most clogs are caused by the same thing, here are some reasons for a clogged sink.
How does the kitchen sink get clogged?
Garbage collector
- Garbage disposals are the most common cause of sink clogs, as many consumers put various objects down their drains that can cause damage.
- There may be pieces of food wrappers, paper towels, and more stuck in the garbage disposal, causing a blockage or buildup.
Sink drain
- If the proper drain stopper is not used, it could cause a lot of starchy foods, such as potato peelings and pasta, to enter the drain, causing a blockage.
- Never pour grease down your drain, instead pour the grease into a container and dispose of it at special cooking grease collection points if there are any in your area or in the trash.
- Use a plant-based soap, the soap you are using probably contains animal fat, which in turn accumulates as grease. This buildup will clog your kitchen drain over time.
Food Waste
- Food scraps are a common cause of clogged kitchen sinks! Fibrous foods like corn husks and celery are known to clog your drain.
- Whether it’s starchy foods or fibrous foods, make sure to throw all food particles in the trash and properly de-grease dishes before washing them in the sink.
- Never pour cooking oils or grease down the drain as they will harden and cause blockages in the kitchen drain over time.

Damaged pipes
- A corroded siphon or elbow-shaped pipe can cause a clogged or slow-draining sink.
- If grease or rotten food is not removed, the drains in your sink can become damaged. Check the pipes under the sink to make sure they are working properly.
Kitchen sink blockage – How to unclog a kitchen sink?
A clogged kitchen sink drain can be annoying, especially when it prevents you from performing any daily tasks. There are several steps you can take to unclog your kitchen sink.
Say NO to liquid drain cleaners
- Do not use chemical drain cleaners as they are harsh toxic substances. If you have metal pipes, chemical drain cleaners are very likely to cause damage inside the pipes.
- These caustic chemicals may cause harm to you and your family, as they may release toxic substances that are harmful to the skin and respiratory system.
Vinegar and baking soda
- Vinegar and baking soda are great for clearing mildly clogged drains! These household items are a natural alternative to using chemical drain cleaners.
- The reaction of white vinegar and a cup of baking soda produces different chemicals called sodium bicarbonate and carbon dioxide.
- Mix baking soda and vinegar (white distilled vinegar is the best choice), then immediately pour it down your clogged sink drain, which will create a reaction that can clear the blockage.
Hot water
- You can also unclog a kitchen sink by pouring hot water down the sink drain.
- Use a pot to boil water and then carefully pour the hot water down the drain. Make sure to pour all of the boiling water directly down the drain.
- If it’s just a small clog, boiling water is all you need to loosen the debris to clear your bathtub drain.
Steel or drain snake
- A drain snake, also known as a drain auger, can help remove any food particles stuck in the siphon to clear the blockage.
- A coiled spiral snake is a type of drain snake that can reach down into the drain and pull out any food debris.
- Don’t use a makeshift option from household items like a wire hanger. A wire hanger doesn’t reach far and misuse can get stuck in the drain causing more damage.
Suction cup
- A simple at-home method to unclog your kitchen sink drain is to use a suction cup!
- First, remove as much standing water as you can to gain proper access to the drain opening.
- Create a tight seal around the drain opening. If you have a double sink on the other side, close the stopper there too before you start dipping the suction cup up and down.
- Start submerging and see if the water drains easily. If so, your job is done!
Kitchen sink blockage – Frequently Asked Questions
A smelly sink is usually caused by bacteria that accumulate from grease and food that falls down the drain. These then stick to the pipes, causing the familiar rotten egg smell.
The first problem you are likely to notice is slow drainage. When you turn on the tap, the water will be slow to go down the drain. After a while, if this is not resolved, the water will start to rise and the drainage will eventually stop completely.
Remove standing water from the sink with a cup or bowl. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain, using a spatula or spoon to push the powder down the drain if necessary. Pour one cup of white vinegar into the drain opening. Place a stopper or cover over the drain to seal the opening. Wait half an hour, remove the stopper, and test to see if the water flow is free.
If your kitchen waste is gushing into your bathtub, it means there’s a blockage somewhere in the drains, deeper than the drain hole. Depending on the size of your home, the clog could be in the first stage, which combines your kitchen with your bathtub, or further down toward the main drain of the house.
